DALLAS (February 19, 2009) - Twenty years ago, Parkland Memorial Hospital was the first to complete the verification process to be a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. After a recent verification survey, Parkland is once again recognized for its optimal care for injured patients.
Parkland met a series of stringent criteria that assure trauma care capabilities as outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma. The review entailed an on-site survey by a team of experienced trauma surgeons.
"Once again the trauma program completed the verification process with no deficiencies," said Brad Simmons, senior vice president, Surgical Services. "This demonstrates the hard work and commitment of the trauma medical leadership, staff of the Trauma Program, Board of Managers and the medical staff as they strive for excellence in trauma care."
The survey team identified 17 strengths in Parkland's Trauma Program including disaster response planning, trauma research, injury prevention, psychosocial support for the patient and family, rehabilitation and strong teamwork.
To earn and retain the Level I designation, Parkland must provide total care for every aspect of the injured patient from the initial medical treatment through rehabilitation as well as prevention. Additional responsibilities for the verification include education, research and participation in regional and state system programs, among other criteria.
"Recently, Parkland's Trauma Program also received the Trauma Facility of the Year Award from the Texas Department of State Health Services for its 20-year commitment to maintaining trauma center designation and participation in regional and system development," said Jorie Klein, RN, director of Trauma and Disaster Management. "This is a direct result of teamwork, leadership investment in the Trauma Program and commitment from all providers who care for the injured patient and their families through the course of their hospitalization."
Parkland is one of only 13 Level I Comprehensive Trauma Centers in Texas and one of two in Dallas.
