National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. donates to Parkland

Gift will provide mammograms to underserved women
The National Breast Cancer Foundation doubled its support of Parkland, graciously awarding $100,000 to Parkland Foundation for treatment of underserved women at Parkland's Comprehensive Breast Center. The funds are designated for mammograms and ultrasounds for women who otherwise would not be able to afford those services.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation is already a supporter of Parkland and its efforts to eradicate breast cancer. In 2008, the foundation generously gave $50,000. That gift alone assisted 100 patients but was fully expended in seven months due to the overwhelming need for diagnostic breast services in Dallas County.

"We have doubled the size of our donation this year because we have confidence in Parkland's caring support of women and their health needs. Parkland's Comprehensive Breast Center offers women quality care through their digital mammography. More lives will be saved because of tumors found at early stages," said Janelle Hail, founder of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. "We were so happy to begin our partnership with Parkland in 2008 and to align our mission with such a fine medical facility known for its excellent care to the needy."

Based in Frisco, Texas, the National Breast Cancer Foundation conducts programs nationwide to help underserved women. The foundation aims to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for those in need.

"As a breast cancer survivor since 1991, I have witnessed the improved development of mammography equipment to make early detection more effective," Hail said.

Parkland's Comprehensive Breast Center opened in 2008 at 5701 Maple Ave. The new center centralized all breast imaging services, including preventive and diagnostic imaging and treatment in one location with twice the space of the previous area at the main hospital. With a dedicated parking lot and location along multiple Dallas Area Rapid Transit routes, the facility improves access for current patients and allows for future patient growth.

"The mission of Parkland and that of the National Breast Cancer Foundation make for a natural partnership because we both aim to help those in need. Together, we can have a more resounding impact, saving the lives of many more women through education, prevention and better access to health care," said David E. Krause, president and chief executive officer, Parkland Foundation.
